Who was your favorite teacher?

For me, it was Mrs. Makowski, who I was lucky enough to have in second grade and again in fifth. I don’t remember much about her other than that she was very tall and had dark hair. Mostly I remember that she made me feel confident and smart. She was the teacher who instilled my love of story-telling.

The lessons you learn from good teachers stay with you for life.

Friday my daughter said goodbye to her first teacher, “Maitresse,” the most amazing teacher and one of the most amazing people I have ever met. My daughter has spent the past three years at Maitress’s unique, in-home, bilingual school.

Maitresse taught my daughter to read, to write and to speak French. She also taught my daughter how to ride a bike, to cook, to be a good friend and to respect the world and those around her. She taught my shy girl to stand up for herself.

Maitresse did what comes naturally to really good teachers—she went beyond academics and she showered my child with love every single day.

Watching my daughter’s last preschool performance, I couldn’t believe I was seeing the same timid little girl who entered school three years ago. She exuded confidence and happiness. She was a true leader for the younger children. All of her special gifts had brought to life.

Part of the transformation is simply her growing up, but more so it has been growing up with the right teacher.

Watching my daughter say goodbye to her teacher broke my heart. Saying goodbye to her myself broke my heart, too.

Because I’ve raised my daughter far from family, Maitresse has been the experienced parent (she's raised four amazing children) I could turn to for advice. She has seen far more of the world than I so she has been the wiser friend I could ask about life.

Between pickup and drop-off, we have squeezed in conversations that went beyond parent-teacher dynamics. We have talked real life. We have become friends.

She has been my teacher, too. I have no doubt, her lessons will stick with me for life.

She is an amazing teacher. Symone has been blessed to have her in her life and so have you. Fortunately, you have a friendship with her that you will always have.

I agree, she is the best teacher and after 5 years she has become one of my best friends. Maitresse went above and beyond being a teacher, I believe that she is my boys other mom.
